The Jet d'Eau, Geneva’s iconic 140-meter water fountain, has become one of the city's most beloved landmarks, but its creation was nearly a happy accident. In 1886, the city's waterworks, responsible for providing motive power to Geneva's watchmakers and craftspeople, needed an outlet for the water when the workshops closed at night. This unintended release of water led to the creation of the famous fountain, quickly capturing the hearts of both locals and visitors alike.
By night, the Jet d’Eau transforms into a dazzling display, illuminated by projectors. On special occasions, it even changes color in support of various humanitarian causes. Be sure to check the calendar for its illuminations and opening hours here.
If you want to see the Jet d’Eau live, take a look here.
The Jet d'Eau isn’t just a beautiful sight — it’s also a remarkable feat of engineering! With a height of 140 meters, water shoots through the air at speeds of 200 km/h, and with a flow rate of 500 liters per second, the fountain propels a staggering 7 tonnes of water into the sky! Each droplet stays airborne for a graceful 16 seconds before it splashes back into the lake. Quite the magnificent and technical spectacle!
Keeping the Jet d’Eau running smoothly is a delicate task. Five retirees from the Services Industriels de Genève take turns ensuring the fountain’s optimal performance. They monitor wind conditions and temperatures, shutting off the valves when needed to protect the water feature from extreme conditions. These guardians are always on the lookout to keep Geneva’s symbol flowing proudly!
You can catch a ride on Geneva's famous "Mouettes" (water taxis), which provide easy access to the Jet d’Eau, offering a unique perspective of this stunning display.
The Flower Clock, located in the heart of the Jardin Anglais, was created in 1955 and contains around 12 000 flowers. The patterns and arrangements are redesigned 4 times a year. Beyond its decorative aspect, the Flower Clock tells the time with Swiss precision.
The time it displays is actually transmitted by satellite. To give another idea of its sheer size, its seconds hand is 2.5 long and the world's biggest!

Geneva’s oldest private residence still standing!
The Maison Tavel is a unique testimony to medieval civil architecture in Switzerland. Destroyed by fire in 1334, it was rebuilt by the Tavels, a noble Genevan family who gave the house its character of an urban palace. Converted into a museum in 1986, its six levels illustrate the city's urban development and various aspects of the daily life of Geneva’s former inhabitants.

Geneva’s watchmaking industry was born in the mid-16th century, when many European Protestants found refuge in Geneva to flee religious persecution, welcomed by Jean Calvin.
The story goes that Calvin decided to ban the wearing of jewellery during this particularly austere period and that the city’s goldsmiths had to find an alternative and turned to watchmaking, delicately decorating watches and clocks with precious stones and materials. Thus was born in the city of Geneva, the luxury watchmaking industry and its unique pieces.
Introduced by the Republic and Canton of Geneva in 1886 as the ultimate standard of excellence and the emblem of the know-how of Geneva’s fine watchmaking, the Poinçon de Genève (Geneva Seal) guarantees the origin, quality and reliability of the craftsmanship.
Geneva’s watchmaking expertise has spread throughout the world for several centuries. The Poinçon de Genève is a guarantee of authenticity, of a product made by the best craftsmen of the Republic and Canton of Geneva, whose success is recognised throughout the world. Only a handful of select, Geneva-based watchmakers and “manufactures” have been awarded this certification. A watch bearing the Poinçon de Genève is not only a time-measuring instrument but a work of art. To obtain this distinction, each component must be manufactured with the utmost care, and finely decorated.
The beauty of a watch must serve to highlight its precise operation. This is why the Poinçon de Genève subjects each watch to a number of tests to ensure its quality and reliability. A watch certified by the Poinçon de Genève offers the assurance of a quality timepiece, manufactured according to the latest technologies in terms of reliability and precision.
Have you ever heard of a “cabinotier”? A cabinotier was, in Geneva, a worker employed by a “cabinet”, i.e. a small watchmaking workshop at the time. A cabinotier was not necessarily a watchmaker, he could be a jeweller, an engraver or a gem-cutter (lapidary).
In the 18th century, the cabinotiers forged a solid reputation based on the quality of their work, meticulousness and precision. They contributed greatly to Geneva’s reputation throughout the world.
They were based in the Saint-Gervais district on the left bank of Geneva. As they needed as much light as possible to carry out their meticulous tasks, they moved to the top floors of the buildings, which had many small windows that almost touched each other. Walking through this district, these windows can still be seen today.
Reference 57260, with 57 complications - including some original ones for this level of accomplishment and complexity - comprising more than 2,800 components.
Started in 1886 as a safety valve for Geneva’s watchmaking workshops before rising to 140m and becoming the city’s iconic symbol.
